So my Backstreet concert last weekend was fabulous. I had a blast and ended up being in the 10th row which wasn’t too shabby (buying tickets through the fan club this year was sort of sketchy and I had no idea where my seats were until I picked up the tickets the day of the show… yikes!). I ended up getting a few really good pictures which made me happy too.

Knitting while waiting for the gates to open…

It’s been a while… Last time we spoke I was still in Happy World (aka Florida) and having a blast.

Well my first time working on a Sunday in the shop certainly proved to be an interesting one. Why, you ask? Oh something about a tornado warning and a massive storm that rolled through the greater Lansing area… *groan*

Thankfully, no damage was done to the shop. One of those big plastic real estate newspaper holder thingamabobs was in the middle of the parking lot but that was about it. No yarn was harmed. hehe.

Those of us who were in the store at the time the sirens went off all gathered in the hallway near the bathrooms with Tate (and knitting, of course…). We were kept updated on the storm via my mother who was sending me text messages from her work (where there was a television to watch for weather updates) and my handy dandy iPod Touch on which I could check Weather.com every few seconds for updates. I would have snapped a picture of us all cozy in the hall but my camera was in my car… darn.

I still haven’t heard for sure if a tornado touched down but I can tell you that my neighborhood is a big fat mess. There are trees down all over the place and power outtages galore. My house didn’t have any damage thankfully but my power was out when I finally made it through the mess to get home. It took a good half an hour or more to get home from the shop (I live about 5 minutes away in good traffic) because the police were blocking off certain streets and trees were blocking others. Craziness.

Aside from all of the crazy around here, things are still crafty. 🙂

Jewelry I made for Brian’s Heathly Heart Club fundraiser in Atlanta this coming Saturday:

My Everlasting Bagstopper for the Knitted Market Bag class I’m teaching in July is coming along nicely… (it’s actually green despite what it looks like in the picture…)

My Mom who not too long ago took Sabrina’s Never Touched a Needle class at the shop finished her first sweater:

And it looks darn cute on Doodlebutt…

Finally… the past week has taught me a few things…

Bubba still enjoys candy and goofing off for the camera. 🙂

Doodlebutt has great Sweaty Hairdos…

He’s also often too sexy for his clothes…

These two make me smile a whole lot…

Ice cream is always better with french fries…

And it IS possible to run the stoplights at a major intersection with a plugged in generator after two nights of massive storms…

Things I learned without pictures… my cousin who had brain surgery this week is pretty darn brave. The Wii Fit is damn fun. Sleeping in a bed with Doodlebutt and Boo is hazardous to my sleep and also my face (getting head butted in the face in middle of the night… so not cool). So You Think You Can Dance makes me cry EVERY week. And… the movie Speed Racer isn’t nearly as bad as people are saying it is especially when you see it with two of the most adorable boys in the world.

So in all, things are okay. A little stormy and a whole lot busy, but okay. 🙂

Edit: Follow this link and you’ll see a HUGE tree that was totally uprooted not too far from my house.

I’ve never before in my life done a gauge swatch. Yes, I know… the absofreakinglute horror of a LYS Assistant Manager who hates to swatch, right? *rolls eyes* I’m just an impatient knitter… when I want to knit, I want to knit… not to knit a square that is going to be ripped out after I spend time making it. Ya know? I seriously crack up when people talk about doing swatches for socks. Seriously? *shrug* Anyway… considering the project d’jour is a shop model and really needs to be on gauge I’ll have you know that last night I did my first swatch. I hated doing it, and still don’t forsee a future of swatches made without bitching, but… I did it. 🙂 I haven’t actually checked to see if I’m on track or not because frankly, I don’t want to know. I want to think that my gauge is just perfection and I can begin the actual knitting. Cause if it’s not okay then I’ll have to re-swatch and yeah… that’s something that pretty much makes me want to gag. Plus if that’s the case then I can’t knit tonight during Idol because I don’t have any other needles with me. By eyeballing it, I think it’s okay, but I’ve gotta check for sure with the appropriate tools later.

What am I swatching for, you ask? It’s a vest. Mountain Colors Foothill Vest to be more specific. Something I’d never ever wear (not a vest person… nope), but I’m happy to make the model.

Made a new kind of stitch marker last night… so far I’m liking them.

Also made two more I ❤ Knitting pins for two of my girls who wanted them…

The pictures are kind of crappy, the colors are off… but you get the idea. 🙂 I also made a glasses string for Sabrina…

Lastly… belated pictures. 🙂

Knit Weekend Revisited… Kristi stole my camera during the Night O’ Wine and took a few self portraits. LOL This is my favorite. And this was before the back surgery! 🙂

And a Knit Weekend isn’t complete without a picture of Kristi laying somewhere odd on her back. Remember the last one?

Where's Kristi?

You’ve seen this Bergere de France ad in Vogue Knitting, right?

Come on, vogue!

Yeah well Franklin can rock the swing jacket too… hehe… 🙂

Finally… a glance at another kick ass birthday cake crafted at the last minute by my SIL and me. 🙂 For the non Star Wars people this would be the scene where Obi Wan and Anakin fight in Episode 3 and we find out why Darth Vadar needs the breathing machine and helmet thing in the future. 🙂 Hehe… Wesley specifically wanted that scene on his cake this year. 🙂

Star Wars rocks!

Tis all for now. 🙂

A bird in the hand

It was a slow night at the shop this past Monday…

Anyone who has read my blogs for a decent amount of time knows that I don’t enjoy birds. Certainly my Scary Bird video of July 2007 showed that when it comes to birds that they freak me out. It’s not so much that I dislike birds, it’s just that I don’t want them near me (and in the case of the previously mentioned video I obviously don’t like it when they make their Scary Bird sounds at me either. LOL).

I’ve had issues with birds since I was little. On trips to the zoo, the walk-through bird house always caused me anxiety and I’d try to get through it as quickly as possible without losing whatever group I was with. It didn’t dawn on me until my late teens that I could actually refuse to go through the bird house and meet the others on the opposite side… I was a little slow on the uptake apparently.

Considering this issue I have with birds being in close proximity to me, imagine my disposition when on Monday while working at the shop I hear, “There’s another damn bird in the store…” spring from Sabrina’s mouth. Apparently there had been a bird in the store last week too when I was, thankfully, not working. I wasn’t so lucky this time though…

So this bird is flying around the store. Flying, swooping and dive bombing dipping low basically freaking me the hell out. Each time the bird flew anywhere near me I let out a girlie squeak with a duck of my head. :o)

LuAnn, one of our newest TB employees, clearly isn’t afraid of our feathered friends because she decided she’d try and catch the bird for a safe release outside. She grabbed a blanket as Super Bird-Catching Tool and Lisa, another employee, says, “Not the Collinette blanket!!” Swapping her expensive tool for a less expensive one she then set out to track the bird.

Eventually the bird who I admit I felt bad for, as long as s/he wasn’t near me, flew right into one of the front windows and went down real fast. In a moment of sheer bravery, or perhaps momentary insanity, I went to the front of the store with the Bird Hunter to see if perhaps the bird broke it’s neck or at least stunned itself. We get up to the front and there’s no sign of Tweety whatsoever. I pointed out to LuAnn where I saw the bird fall (oh-so-conveniently between the window and the pattern folders). I tried to see the bird from the side while LuAnn perched with the non-collinette blanket.

You do know what happened next, right? *nods* Yeah, Tweety comes flying out from behind the pattern folders right over LuAnn’s head like a jet fighter. I may have swore, I may have squeaked, all I remember is jumping back several feet real fast to avoid Zogega** Then LuAnn and I laughed our asses off.

Tweety’s now flying around the store like a drunk airline pilot and hitting the walls, the lights, and occasionally taking a break to rest on the assorted sweater models that hang from our ceiling. Lisa meanwhile keeps mentioning that the bird has a brain the size of a pea and keeps telling me to calm down each time that Tweety dive bombed us.

At one point while I was helping Lisa with a yarn and pattern question, Tweety decided to hide on the floor under a spinner rack of yarn. Lisa swore the bird wasn’t there and was walking around the spinner to look for him. *nods again* Tweety comes flying out from under the spinner right over my head and I again ducked and covered.

Lisa says, “Kellie… walk this way…”

LOL the damn bird was on a model right over my head! Ahhh!

Eventually LuAnn and Lisa said they had the bird and took the blanket outside to release the little guy but alas… no bird. LOL I dunno what they thought they had but it wasn’t Tweety. He finally went through one of the vents and found himself stuck in the drop ceiling of the store where we heard him flying around and banging on the ceiling tiles. We didn’t have a return appearance so hopefully s/he got out somehow but the whole experience was certainly an interesting one. :o)

Yeah, I can totally do without every having a bird in the store again… mmmkay?

** An evil Bird Spirit called, Zogega, guarded the shore of an island from which the bad spirits made cannibalistic forays against the humans.

I had a perfectly good (and almost finished) post written up and then my computer decided to freeze up. *kicks it* About a week ago I got this message from Dell saying that I needed to install their support center thingy and ever since I did, I’ve had nothing but trouble… ironic, eh? Anyway, let’s see if I can remember what the hell I said the first time around. 🙂

First of all… how many of you get the Lion Brand newsletter and cracked up over this one?

Bwahaha… seriously? Um yeah… okay, no. Geesh…

I survived my first Black Friday (and Saturday) as a retail worker. 🙂 The shop was uber busy yesterday until about 4:00 and then it was pretty slow, but the sales were quite impressive for the day if you ask me. 🙂 Later in the evening a familiar face came into the shop though quickly followed by the question, “Are we allowed to hug the employees?!” Yes, Miss Kelli aka Knitterbunny was in town to judge a bunny thing this weekend and stopped by to say hi and dig through our yarn at the shop. So I got not one but two Kelli Hugs and that totally made the day!

I did however go home with a wicked migrane last night which didn’t taper off until about 10 this morning, but luckilly I didn’t work today until 1:00 so I was able to get a little bit of painless sleep before I had to be back at work. I reallllly need a massage now though… Today we were pretty darn busy again but it wasn’t quite as crazy as yesterday. I also spent a great deal of time setting up the display for the new Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend yarn which is just purrrrty. 🙂 You can see the colors over at Purl Soho.com, but ours is cheaper so buy it from us instead. 🙂

I don’t really have any knitting content pictures to share, but I can share some stash stuff. 🙂 Last Wednesday I bought myself a treat. I’m now the proud owner of Fergie the Frog. It’s a handy little trinket holder for stitch markers, mini scissors, and other stuff needed while knitting. I wouldn’t have normally spent that much on something to hold stuff in, but I’m a frog lover and well… how could I resist? Plus it’ll be nice because for a while Devin won’t be able to figure out how to get the zipper open and therefore won’t be able to dump my stuff all over the floor. hehe… This picture doesn’t do the color justice, btw.

This lovely yarn is Autunno by Di.ve and it’s all for me. 🙂 I decided I needed a new scarf and perhaps some matching wrist warmers so last week after molesting this yarn I got it.

As for stuff I don’t have pictures of… I bought some Jitterbug (my first ever purchase of the stuff! *gasp*), it’s not for me though… it’ll soon be a pair of Christmas socks for someone special. 🙂 I also bought my first Alpaca… also not for me though. LOL I’m making the Maple Shawl out of a strand of Drops Alpaca held with a strand of Drops Cotton Viscose… should be lovely. Seems like there was something else, but I can’t think of it right now. 🙂 Oh wait, I remember… I bought The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns after Suann told me that it was a good one that I needed. We didn’t have it at the shop (we do now though) so I found a used one on Amazon (oh how I love used books!) and it arrived in the mail today. 🙂

Oh and check this out… 🙂 About a month into working at the shop I made myself a Ghetto name tag because I didn’t have a real one. I ganked a name tag that belonged to an ex-employee and covered her name with mine. But my darling Matt finally decided today that I needed a non ghetto one. 🙂

Ghetto Fabulous…

Ghetto Fab...

Thanks, Matt!

Thanksgiving came and went without any major family drama so that was lovely. 🙂 Ravyn and Wesley decorated the dinner table for us this year and made personalized name cards. 🙂 Wesley made mine…

But his was the best of all of them… hehe…

More pictures will be in my photo blog later tonight for your viewing pleasure after I have the chance to upload them. 🙂

And on that note, I’m outta here! I might do some charity knitting with Sarah and the other Guild Girls tomorrow, but that depends on the status of my poor neck and back tomorrow. 🙂

Happy Knitting!

Whoops I forgot…

I got the permanent job at the library. 🙂 I mentioned it in my daily blog but forgot that a lot of you guys over here don’t read that one. 🙂 It’s only 20 hours a week, but it pays more an hour than my full time but temporary job at the library was paying me, and it’s not temporary so that’s fantastic. Plus I have the feeling that juggling two part time jobs will be a lot easier than holding down a full time and a part time job… we’ll see though. I start the new position tomorrow morning. 🙂

Oh and if you want to see the cutest little Star Wars kids ever… check out my Halloween pictures in my photo blog.
